Repurposing Kitchens

Going beyond the traditional pantry model of offering raw ingredients (e.g. potatoes, eggs, rice) or nonperishable canned foods which often are high in sodium, Abound Food Care’s network of food repurposing kitchens turns excess edible food into delicious, ready-to-heat-and-eat meals.

The Challenge

While addressing hunger, much of the food traditionally distributed to community members who are food insecure is not high in nutritional content. Food recipients are in need of meals that are both enjoyable and nutritionally balanced.

Our Solution

By routing excess edible food to a network of repurposing kitchens we enable culinary experts and students to create flavorful and highly nutritious meals for the food insecure. Ready-to-heat-and-eat meals are vacuum sealed and frozen for ease of transport and storage.

Medically Tailored
Meals

Working with healthcare providers and family resource centers, Abound Food Care identifies food insecure residents in the community and provides healthy, nutritious meals that comply with special diets — promoting better health outcomes, while reducing hunger and food waste.

Kitchen
Network

Abound Food Care works with local restaurants and culinary education kitchens, providing them with access to recovered food and supplies needed for creating meals. Our network of permitted food-production facilities produce individual meals that are vacuum-sealed and frozen to extend shelf life and maintain the highest level of food safety.

Vocational
Training

Through involvement with repurposing kitchens, culinary students have the opportunity to gain meaningful culinary experience with the guidance of culinary experts. Kitchens are not only producing healthy meals for community members, they are developing the next generation of culinary professionals.
